Group 2's members are: Will Scales, David Austin, Hieu Dinh, and Kevin Nguyen.
Overview:
This project is aimed at investigating the unconventional use of an eccentric rotary engine assembly (also known as a Wankel engine) as an air compressor. The main goal of the group is to design and produce a functional rotary engine air compressor with the help of 3D design software and advanced manufacturing methods. Using the engineering design process, the group will come up with CAD models according to research conducted on rotary engines, evaluate different designs and their manufacturing methods, and produce and iterate over multiple prototypes until the optimal compressor design is determined. The final deliverable is planned to be a working rotary engine compressor, detailed CAD models, as well as a report containing data on the performance of the mechanism in simulations as well as in physical testing. Through this process, the group hopes to gain experience with the full engineering design process, 3D-design software, and advanced manufacturing techniques.
